Book 41 - Digital Fortress by Dan Brown

Digital Fortress [DIGITAL FORTRESS REV/E]
Digital Fortress [DIGITAL FORTRESS REV/E]
959 books to go!

I can't be certain but I believe in completing this novel I have read all of Dan Brown's work. Shawn had this novel at his house so I picked it up and added it to my pile of books to read that I keep at Shawn's.

I didn't regret this read at all. Dan Brown starts his gripping, thrilling, mystery solving, code breaking work with Digital Fortress his debut album (although he seems to lose his skills in Lost Symbol). In this novel the NSA (National Security Association) is faced with the process of an unbreakable code known as digital fortress. A race begins to obtain a passkey for digital fortress, while the objective of obtaining a passkey is happening, mystery and secrets begin to unravel gripping the reader to finish the book and learn everything.

If you haven't checked out this semi lesser known work of Dan Brown's I recommend you do so.

Book 40 - Columbine by Jeff Kass

Columbine: A True Crime Story, a victim, the killers and the nation's search for answers
Columbine: A True Crime Story, a victim, the killers and the nation's search for answers

960 books to go!

This is one of quite a few books written about the Columbine High School shootings. I'm a true crime buff and I'm actually fascinated with Columbine more so than other true crime stories for some reason. I anticipate reading more books about it and have already read one book prior to this one by Dave Cullen which was extremely good.

Honestly I didn't think this book was going to be that good but I was surprised. It's a pretty good precedent to Dave Cullen's work and is comparable. Jeff Kass starts by writing a chilling account of the killings, he than delves into Eric and Dylan's psyche and thoughts using writings that they both wrote prior to the shootings. He follows up with the aftermath of the shootings and delves into the detail of Isiah Shoel's and his family, Isiah was the only black victim of Eric and Dylan's horrible rampage. The conclusion of the book was a little boring to me, the beginning and middle had me gripped, I was a bit tired though while reading the conclusion so maybe if my concentration level was up to par I would have felt differently.

The author also suggests that there isn't enough access to some of the columbine evidence, he thinks some of it has been destroyed or covered up, I do agree with him, people need to be aware of this information and certain things need to be released to the public so that if the public chooses to study this information they can be vigilant and recognize potential signs in another school shooting before another columbine or Virginia tech incident happens again.

Just another side or personal note about this subject before I conclude this entry which seems to have turned into a little more than a book review. I am extremely baffled at how the Harrises did not realize that their son had all kinds of bombs and weapons in their home. I guess it's possible to turn a blind eye, or suspect something but not have any proof, but I would like to think if this was my child I would have some sort of idea that they had these things before they went off on a rampage unless they kept their weapons at a friend's home. I'm also a different person, I have never hidden anything from my parents, even if they didn't approve of something I was doing they at least knew what the deal was because I told them straight what I was up to. Then again I wasn't getting ready to plan a shooting. I've been told from friends and acquaintances who have hidden things from their parents that it can be easy to do so, but how could they have not searched their son's room or wondered downstairs and found part of his arsenal and confronted him about it. If they had realized something was amiss this tragedy could have possibly been prevented.

Ok I'm concluding this entry before it turns into a full blown diary entry, until the next book my readers.

Book 39-Fables #15 Rose Red by Bill Willingham

Fables Vol. 15: Rose Red
Fables Vol. 15: Rose Red
961 books to go!

Just finished pawing through the latest fables installment. Some nice bright good stuff happened to the residents of Fabletown along with some pretty bad stuff too. Rose Red finally came out of her depression to lead the farm in this time of danger for the Fables, Bellflower formerly Frau Totenkamer almost defeated the dark one but didn't quite win, Beauty and the Beast had their baby and that turned out alright, but by the novel's end most of the fables are now homeless, I can't wait until #16 for the intrigue to continue.

Book 37 - The dream hunters by Neil Gaiman and P. Craig Russell

Sandman: Dream Hunters (Sandman (Graphic Novels))
Sandman: Dream Hunters (Sandman (Graphic Novels))

963 books to go!

Shawn picked this book up when we hit the beginning stages of the closing sale for Borders Books in Westbury. It was one of the sandman novels we didn't read yet. He read it awhile ago, I just got to go through it now. This was a pretty interesting story set in the times of Old Japan. A fox comes across a monk and makes it a mission to dislodge him from his home. During her scheming she ends up falling in love with the monk and making a great sacrifice for him. This is a great story of forbidden love and revenge.

Book 36 - Heartsick by Chelsea Cain

964 books to go!

I loved this book, mostly I like or love anything I come across to read but sometimes I don't. This book was incredibly captivating. It's not for the squeamish or non horror fans though. The two main characters in the book are Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell. The back story at the start of this novel is that Gretchen (a female serial killer) kidnapped Archie and tortured him while he was leading the task force to hunt for her, she was known as the beauty killer. This novel alternates between Archie's memories of being tortured by Gretchen and the hunt for a new serial killer dubbed the after school strangler. It's an extremely gripping thrilling read, one of those books that you just can't put down because you need to know what happens at the end. The ending was curious to me, Archie seems like he's heading on a path to recovery but this is the first in a series of four books so far and they are titled the Gretchen Lowell novels so I just have a feeling he's going to have to encounter Gretchen again and this might halt his recovery, but I guess I'll see when I pick up the rest of the series. My sister passed this book to me (which is weird, because normally I pass books to her) and I ordered copies of the other three books from amazon, I have a feeling I'll devour these quickly when I have a chance to read them. Gretchen Lowell seems to be the female version of Hannibal Lector. Definitely worth the read for sure if you are a thriller mystery fan. It appeared on an WYNC's top thriller list that I found at work, and I couldn't agree more this thriller is aces.

Book 35 - The girl who played with fire by Stieg Larsson

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard)
The Girl Who Played with Fire (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard)
965 books to go!

Finished this book on my kindle this morning, now to conclude the trilogy. This book had more action than the first one in the series and a bit more intrigue included, regarding the personal life of the main character Lisbeth Salander. The ending was very exciting, but I felt it didn't conclude as well as the first book in the series regarding a wrap up and conclusion (this could be done though to lead the reader into the last book of the trilogy). I'm sure many readers before me will agree that this trilogy is worth your time to read it :)

Book 34 - Peter & Max by Bill Willingham

Peter & Max: A Fables Novel
Peter & Max: A Fables Novel

966 books to go!

This fables novel by Bill Willingham tells the story of a war between Peter Piper and his brother Max. The novel spans the time period of centuries from when Peter & Max were little boys to modern times in which fabletown exists. There's tons of action, excitement, horror, sadness that concludes with a very happy ending. Any fables geeks must get their hands on this book for a read, they won't regret it, like any good book I come across this one had me compulsively turning the pages until I reached the novel's conclusion.

Book 33-Room by Emma Donoghue

Room: A Novel
Room: A Novel

967 books to go!

This book was extremely impressive. It is worth the read for sure. The beginning of the book introduces us to the narrator/main character of the novel little Jack. Little Jack was conceived by rape of his mother's captor who kidnapped her when she was 19. The novel starts off in the sound proof room that the captor keeps his mother and little Jack in, later in the novel little Jack has to adapt to some changes, this book deals with Jack's journey. The writing was excellent Emma Donoghue lets the reader into Jack's thoughts and does a wonderful job.
