Book 251 The Plot Thickens edited by Mary Higgins Clark

The Plot Thickens

749 books to go!

Mary Higgins Clark edited and presented a compilation of short stories to support a literacy foundation. Each story had to include three items, a thick book, a thick fog and a thick steak. This was an enjoyable set of clever and scary short stories. It's an older book but still worth a read.

Book 250 Dead Canaries don't sing by Cynthia Baxter

Dead Canaries Don't Sing (Reigning Cats & Dogs Mysteries, No. 1)

750 books to go!

This is the first in a series featuring mobile vet Jessica Popper. Jessica works on Long Island and on her way to an appointment she stumbles upon the dead body of Tommy Frack a famous PR person on Long Island. Jessica starts to investigate Frack's murder despite the warnings that she shouldn't do it from her complicated lover Nick Burby.

I really didn't enjoy this book much. Jessica Popper's character annoyed me, I wished she wouldn't jerk Nick around like she did. Her best friend Betty's character was meant to be charming but she was utterly ridiculous. The novel was also really cheesy, complete with the villian or bad man's favorite phrase of "Jesus H. Christmas". I was also kind of annoyed because the writer chose to fictionalize Long Island with town names that don't exist. When I read about a place even in a work of fiction personally I want to read it accurately, especially Long Island because I live here.

I chose to read this because I have one of the books from this series on my kindle but the book was free so I might just delete off my device and not even bother continuing to read these.

Book 249 Daughter of Light by V.C. Andrews

Daughter of Light (Kindred)

751 books to go!

Another creepy V.C. Andrews book that's doubly creepy because it's written quasily beyond the grave. This is a surprising second book in the Kindred Series. Lorelei has fled, leaving Poor Buddy, her love behind. She runs from her vampire father into the town of Quincy. There she gets a job right away, and falls in love with her boss' son Liam. Eventually her father tracks her down, just when you think there will be danger and unhappiness for Lorelei, everything ends up working out beautifully, which is not typical V.C. Andrrews.

I didn't really like this book or the first in the series. I wouldn't bother, although it has the incest that other V.C. Andrews novels do have at times (this incest is highly disturbing), it lacks the lesson I think she goes for in her other novels where the characters are wealthy but still have problems.

Book 248 Wish you were here by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown

Wish You Were Here (Mrs. Murphy Mysteries)

752 books to go!

Mary Fairstein, nicknamed Harry, runs the local post office with her dog and cat in tow at all times. When a member of their small town is murdered after receiving a post card that says "wish you were here," Harry and her pets embark on unraveling the mystery of who the killer is among their small town community.

This was a good read, very cute, very thrilling. I have one of these on my kindle so I'm aiming to get through the whole series.
